Farmers with one million activation values “gradually build soil without rushing”

Niigata Mr. Iichi Ohara

At the time of interview 2010

Iichi Ohara grows rice, tulips and lilies in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture. He is also a member of the city council of Tsubame City. The microbial diversity and activity value of Mr. Ohara's soil is a surprising 100 million or more for all crops.I approached the secret.

Q. What was your first impression after examining soil microbial diversity and activity?

Surprisingly, while the average value for all of Japan is about 600,000, I was surprised to find that the soil of all the fields, such as the Tulip House 1,445,322, the Yuri House 1,169,882, and the 100% organic fertilizer cultivated paddy field 1,093,826, exceeded 100.
In addition, Mr. Kazunari Yokoyama, the head of the production support system research team at the Central Agricultural Research Center, praised me for making soil that was "perfectly made within the top 5%" nationwide. I was relieved that I was not wrong. If you can create healthy soil and produce healthy crops, the people who eat them will also be healthy.I felt like I was rewarded for sticking to making soil that made use of the wisdom of my predecessors.
In addition, we received a Soil mark sticker as proof that we are making soil rich in microorganisms, and we immediately put it on the rice bags of our customers.I think that soil microbial diversity and activity value analysis is worth investigating by farmers all over the country. Thanks to that, it became a bright topic in our house.

Q. Tulips produced very high numbers, didn't they?Did you do anything special?

To tell you the truth, I didn't expect such a big number. I was really surprised because I thought, "If it's a little better than average, it's good, but if it's below average, what should I do?"
I have seen examples of people destroying the soil with cut flowers such as tulips and lilies. 60 tulip bulbs are planted in a 50 tsubo greenhouse, but the flower harvesting rate (shipment rate) is not even 90% for those who destroy the soil.Recently, my family has kept over XNUMX%.
In the market, low prices are spurred on, so the flower collection rate (shipment rate) determines the survival of the business. In the past, I have seen many people who have gambled in soil preparation and failed. From the outside, I have witnessed the hell of being forced to withdraw from cut flowers because the cost of the bulbs was burned, and only the debt remained, so I have no choice but to be cautious.

Q. How about paddy fields?

The paddy fields have kept their promise to the customers to ``make more delicious rice next year than this year,'' and have worked hard with the encouragement of the customers.
At the beginning (62), we asked our customers, "Right now, we can only deliver bad rice, but please trust us in 5 or 10 years and buy it."For paddy fields, I have taken on challenges, thinking that the only thing I can do is to refrain from adventurous things and steadily cultivate the soil.
Even so, in the first two to three years, I think that I put in too much organic matter and ended up delivering Koshihikari that even I couldn't be satisfied with. Now, I think that I have become a normal person with organic farming. It's a natural opponent every year, so there are still many things to reflect on.I think that many people will rush into agriculture if they make money from such an interesting agriculture, but the reality is not so easy.Based on this result, I would like to make further efforts to improve the taste of rice and the longevity of flowers.

Q. Lastly, please tell us about your thoughts on agriculture.

As a member of the city council, I am blessed with the opportunity to look at agriculture from a standpoint different from that of ordinary farmers, and I feel the goodness of agriculture in my own way.In the non-agricultural industry, a capital of 100 yen is worth 100 million yen.Even in such a situation, agriculture is an industry that has never ceased since recorded history.
This foundation is only possible if we steadily earn the trust of our customers.Agriculture is such a business. But now, as prices enter an era of everything, agriculture is facing a harsh reality.
Despite this situation, I would like to continue farming with confidence that the world is beginning to recognize the sincerity of Japanese farmers.I would like the government to create an environment in which it is possible to do business with the rest of the world. I would like to hear a young member of the Diet say, "It must have been good to be able to receive 10 yen per 1a," and say that it will ruin agriculture.I believe that it is the duty of politics to put the high quality and safety of Japanese agricultural products at the forefront and create an environment in which they can enter the world market.
